Seven Questions with Lynice

When did you first start programming and with what language/computer and what did you like the most about this programming experience?

When I was a kid, my grandma had an abacus…Oh, maybe you meant with electricity. That started in college. I took the first level classes, which had us programming in Pascal. Then I moved on to Assembly Language (on a DEC PDP-11), which was like a light bulb for me to understand what was going on under the abstraction of a higher level language.

Describe a project you’ve been involved with which you consider to be your greatest success so far. What made it so successful?

I developed an interactive kids’ game system in Lua to run on a set-top box. It was fun because it was a new language and a new environment for me, and it was seen and used by 3.5 million people. The engine I built was later reskinned with new art and continued to run for quite some time.

If computers and related technology didn’t exist, what do you think your career would be?

Crew on a globe-traveling sailboat. Sailing is a beautiful mix of art and science. And, oh, the places I would go…

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far in your career?

Chemistry between humans often outweighs their qualifications, skills, and experience in determining the success of a project, team, or company.

When it’s time to turn off the computer, what do you do instead?

Dogs and beaches.

Anything else you think we would like to know about you?

I was once a waitress in a greasy spoon truck stop on Route 66.

Do you prefer bacon, sausage or neither?

Doughnuts.
